With our Pinterest mood boards and Instagram saved folders, we are all set to refurbish our homes when the time comes.
However, there is a small matter of money that may prevent you from always being able to buy the home of your dreams.
By making a few minor changes that had no impact on the project’s overall quality or appearance, Sydney residents Jennifer Kang and Andrew Lee were able to remove thousands of dollars from their renovation budget while renovating the one-bedroom plus study apartment they had bought in Sydney’s Lower North Shore. Too expensive for you to buy art? Think about displaying a blanket. You don’t have the money to remodel your bathroom from the ground up. Think about regrouting and see how it affects things.
Here, Jennifer discusses the things she learned that helped her keep costs down when renovating.

How to save in the bathroom:
“We anticipated that tiling our bathroom and laundry would cost about $3,800 (installation alone; tile prices may differ). Rather, we decided to spend $1,800 on significant re-grouting, which included partially re-grouting and sealing two balconies with outside tiles, as well as sealing our new kitchen tiles.
How to save in the kitchen:
Our builder recommended laminate benchtops for our kitchen, pointing us that we might save as much as $5,000 on Caesarstone supply and installation. especially considering the size of our dining-overhanging kitchen island and our preference for a modern, thick-concrete look. Remember that stone needs longer lead time as well.
How to save on joinery:
For our study, we also spoke with joiners through interviews. A joiner quoted us $12,500 for our TV cabinet and an L-shaped bench/storage unit that we couldn’t afford. We were leaving our rental, so it wasn’t ideal that he had a longer lead time as well. Nick from All Smarts Kitchens and Custom Joinery provided us with a price that was $8,950, with features like soft-close European hinges, and had a reasonable lead time.
