Recent months have seen unexpected growth in demand, manufacturing issues, and the shortage of ingredient supplies caused shortages that have put pressure on parents, patients, and medical professionals. Certain medications, like stimulants for ADHD, contributed to increased demand and made it difficult to determine when it would be over.
The shortage of generic medications has been a long-running problem for a long time. The industry has become more consolidated, and some companies have no incentive to address shortages since cheap generics make small profits.
HOW MANY DRUG SHORTAGES ARE THERE?
It was reported that there were 301 nationwide drug shortages in this year’s first quarter, as per the University of Utah Drug Information Service. This is 49% more than the 202 reported in the first quarter of 2018.
Patients need to be made aware of any shortage of medications due to doctors being capable of substituting different drugs or because other components of the supply chain for drugs cover up the problem, according to Stephen Schondelmeyer, a University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy professor.
“But there are more shortages now, and they’re becoming more visible,” the doctor declared.
WHICH DRUGS ARE IN SHORTAGE?
In the fall, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a shortage of the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder treatment Adderall due to a manufacturing problem. The problem has grown occasionally, including other stimulants used to help treat the condition.
According to University of Utah Health researcher Erin Fox, the situation appears to be improving. However, several extended-release doses of the drug, which is the most well-known form, still need to be made available.
The FDA has also tracked a deficiency of diabetic treatment Ozempic that doctors prescribe to help with weight loss. The prescriptions for Ozempic that are often praised by celebrities and other users on social media have increased by more than a third from last summer’s 2021 Summer of Love to over 1.2 million, according to the company that collects health information IQVIA.
An Ozempic manufacturer Novo Nordisk spokesperson says all drug doses are accessible at nationwide pharmacies.
The year before, a rise in respiratory ailments prompted drugstore chains to temporarily limit the purchase of medicines that reduce fever for children. An insufficiency of the antibiotic amoxicillin also arose in the middle of the year.
Injectable medicines used in clinics and hospitals, for example, IV saline and certain cancer treatments, are nearly twice as likely than tablets and topical therapies to suffer shortages, as stated by Senator. WHY DO DRUG SHORTAGES DEVELOP?
This happens for many reasons, and a combination of causes can cause shortages.
The buying adderall online manufacturing issue began appearing when more people began taking the medication.
The pandemic was when prescriptions increased as regulators began permitting doctors prescriptions for the medication without consulting with a patient. The number of prescriptions of Adderall or its generic counterparts increased by 20 percent between Feb. 2020 and the close of the year, as per the IQVIA.
Adderall supply faces an additional issue when demand rises. Federal regulators restrict supplies for the drug each year since the drug is considered a controlled compound.
Pricing could also be a factor when it comes to certain medications.
Ozempic is a diabetic drug. Semaglutide is a similar medication sold under another trade name called Wegovy, a weight-loss medication. Schondelmeyer pointed out that the cost per milligram for Wegovy could be more than twice the price of Ozempic.
“They’ve been having a run on Ozempic because people don’t want to spend that much on Wegovy,” Schondelmeyer stated.

Novo Nordisk spokeswoman Allison Schneider claimed that the price is unrelated to the supply shortage. She attributed it to a mix of supply and demand restrictions.
Another reason for shortages is that Medicines such as Adderall and amoxicillin yield thin profits, so businesses aren’t compelled to produce and store huge quantities if there is a shortage, Fox said.
“Once a shortage starts with something you make just in time anyway, it’s really hard to resolve it unless all the suppliers are back,” she explained.
HOW ARE PATIENTS AFFECTED BY DRUG SHORTAGES?
The lack of supply could cause delays in treatment that could cause harm to patients suffering from chronic illnesses that require time, such as cancer.
Doctors may be ordered to prescribe other medications that may need to be more efficient. It can also result in errors in the prescription if the physician is less familiar with the medication.
Patients could also be unable to refill their prescriptions or find an online pharmacy with enough supplies to refill their prescriptions.
FUTURE PROSPECTS
It’s hard to determine when the shortages could be addressed, partly because it is challenging to gauge demand.
“You can estimate you’re going to increase your production by 10%,” said Mike Ganio, senior director of quality and pharmacy practice for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, “but is that going to be enough?”
In the meantime, conditions that could lead to future shortages remain. The Senate report highlighted an excessive reliance on foreign suppliers as an issue.
Factories located in China and India provide the majority of essential raw materials used in American drugs. In the early days of the COVID-19 epidemic, India banned trade in 13 pharmaceutical active components and manufactured drugs derived from those chemicals to protect its drug supply domestically.
When shortages start to develop, the problem can persist for several years. It can be difficult for patients to find trustworthy information. Fox stated that drug companies are not legally required to inform the public about their latest developments.
The Senate report states that “no federal agency or private industry partner has end-to-end visibility into the entire U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain.”
Fox states that the shortage of stimulants has been especially difficult. Some companies have claimed they’re not receiving enough raw materials to manufacture the drugs, and the government has said that companies aren’t using the materials they have.
“There’s been a lot of finger pointing back and forth,” F
